Other, the Other, dan Another

Use of Other, the Other, and Anotherr

 Other, the other, and another are used to add something previously mentioned. Basically there are two ways to use it, namely: used before noun as a determiner or used alone as a pronoun.

Other, the Other, dan Another:

Other dan the Other

Other / the other can be used as pronouns or adjectives. As pronouns, they replace singular noun; while as an adjective, other is followed by plural noun while the other is followed by singular noun. Other may be followed by singular noun, but there needs to be another determinant in front of it. The formula is as follows.

as pronoun ( singular noun): the Other / determiner lain + other

the other + singular noun

other + plural noun

determiner lain + other + singular noun

When used as a pronoun, others are to add another noun that is separate from the scope or group of the previously mentioned noun. The pronoun said to replace the singular unspecific noun. Instead, the other to add other nouns that are still in one group. Thus, the pronoun was to replace the singular specific noun.

Other	Some people consume coffee regularly. Other people prefer tea. (Sebagian orang mengonsumsi kopi secara teratur. Orang lain lebih menyukai teh.)

	Tessa has two cats. One of her cats is a Persian, the other cat is a Sphynx. (Tessa mempunyai dua kucing. Satu dari kucingnya adalah Persia, kucing yang lain Sphynx.)

Others dan the Others

Others / the others is a plural form of other / the other. Because there is no plural form of adjective, others and the others only play the role of plural plural noun. The formula is as follows.

sebagai pronoun (menggantikan plural noun): others/the others

others	If you call Anna, I’ll call others. (Jika kamu menghubungi Anna, saya akan menghubungi yang lain.)
	Some students played badminton. Others played basketball.
the Others	She has three cats. One of her cats is a Persian, the others are Sphynx. (Dia mempunyai tiga kucing. Satu dari kucingnya adalah Persia, yang lainnya sphinx.)
	I have three brothers. One of my brothers works as an civil engineer, the others work as financial analyst. (Saya punya tiga saudara. Satu dari sudara saya bekerja sebagai enjinir sipil, saudara yang lain bekerja sebagai analis keuangan.)

Another

Another can be used as a pronoun or adjective. As a pronoun, another substitutes singular noun.

sebagai pronoun (menggantikan singular noun): another

Another as adjective is usually followed by singular noun, but this word can also be followed by a plural noun when intended to add a period of time:

• I will give another three months [= an additional three months] to finish the job. (I will give him an additional three months to complete the job.)

	One participant went on to the next challenge. Another participant failed. (Satu peserta lanjut ke tantangan berikutnya. Peserta yang lain gagal.)
